The future is not fixed, it can be shaped. The Zukunftsbilder project presents four future scenarios for Germany in 2040, developed by experts from Scientists For Future and other groups. Only the ‘Slow’ scenario is lacking the courage for change. In the ‘Focused’, ‘Grassroots’ and ‘Big’ scenarios climate goals are met, biodiversity loss is slowed, and a good life for all is possible. These scenarios are not predictions but plausible visions for 2040. They aim to encourage debate and help people form their own opinions about the future, which we must shape together.
There are no photos of the future — which is why illustrations in 40 different illustration styles are used. They give the Zukunftsbilder a participatory and diverse character. This makes exploring the homepage with its scientific content an enjoyable experience. The functionality of the website and the structure of the project is quickly apparent simply by browsing through the diverse range of topics.
The Zukunftsbilder can be used as teaching material and provide inspiration for further cultural projects – for example, they served as inspiration for the play ‘Ultima Ratio’, which was performed as part of the Sommerblut Festival.
Big thanks to my fellow design team members, Lars Quester & Elena Siebecke, the AllCodesAreBeautiful development team, and all other Zukunftsbilder members.
